Maralinga – The Anangu Story
Curator JD Mittmann met with award-winning book author Christobel Mattingley in her Adelaide home. In collaboration with the Yalata and Oak Valley communities Christobel has produced a detailed account of their story: Maralinga – The Anangu Story (published by Allen & Unwin in 2009).
For the book several women produced a series of canvas paintings, which tell their story, including Hilda Moodoo, Dora and Mabel Queama, Janet May, Majorie Sandimar, Yvonne and Teresa Edwards. Some of these will feature in the exhibition Black Mist Burnt Country. Some of these women had experienced the atomic tests in their youth.
“It’s an important story that is not well known”, Christobel Mattingley says.
