Global Security through nuclear weapons?

John Carlson speaks, photograph by JD Mittmann

Earlier this year the Doomsday Clock was moved to 2 minutes to midnight, the same as it was at the height of the Cold War, in 1953. Nuclear proliferation, rogues states and terrorists, and reckless rhetoric have brought nuclear weapons back into the headlines. At the same time, 122 nations voted at the UN General Assembly for a treaty to prohibit nuclear weapons. Is this a pipe dream? Have nuclear weapons actually helped to maintain international security? Are we closer than ever to nuclear catastrophe? An expert panel will examine the current situation and provide an outlook.

Speakers:
Prof Ramesh Thakur Director of the Centre for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (CNND), Crawford School, ANU and co-Convenor of the Asia-Pacific Leadership Network for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (APLN);

Prof Richard Tanter Senior Research Associate, Nautilus Institute, and Honorary Professor in the School of Political and Social Sciences, University of Melbourne;

Jody Broun NSW Executive Director of Australian Red Cross

His Excellency Dr Bernhard Limburg, Austrian Ambassador to Australia;

Dr Stephan Frühling Associate Dean of the College of Asia and the Pacific, and Associate Professor in the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre of the Coral Bell School of Asia-Pacific Affairs, ANU

Moderator: Humphrey McQueen, author and social commentator
